In my eyes, perfumes are one of the most beautiful things ever created. Nothing beats the state of reverie that comes when holding a beautiful bottle of perfume in your hands. The feelings, the memories, the dreams, all encapsulated in the scent of the singing, dancing notes coming from it.
Not long ago I started to build a mostly humble perfume collection. What I really mean by building a collection is that I try to hold to the last millilitres of a perfume and store it in a wooden tray that I keep in a cabinet, instead of just finishing it and putting it on the recycling bin. I love staring at my hidden tray of wonders and having the possibility to come back in time and relive a moment with the sniff of a bottle.
The weather is changing, spring approaching, days are getting longer, and I am craving a solar, warm, slightly floral scent. Those scents that seem to hug you and keep your shoulders warm as a silk scarf would on a midsummer night.
There is three fragrances in particular that I have my eye on at the moment.
Tom Ford – Soleil Blanc
Soleil Blanc is described by the brand as ‘an addictive solar floral amber alive with seductive refinement and refreshing decadence‘. Swoon! The sound of this makes me dream of summer nights by the Mediterranean…
People who had a chance to try it say it reminds them of Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess which I really like and I think is the quintessential solar fragrance. I love the packaging of Soleil Blanc, white and gold, like Tom Ford’s limited edition beauty products for spring/summer. Sleek and bright, perfect!
On the down side, I don’t have a Tom Ford beauty counter nearby, it is on the expensive side of things and I’ve never bought a Tom Ford perfume before. Should I blindly make this one my first TF fragrance purchase?
Guerlain – Floral Romantique (Elixirs Charnels Collection)
Floral Romantique is described by the brand as a woody floral. ‘An angelic alchemy that is fresh, smooth and warm for a sensitive dreamer. A floral bouquet that is demure in appearance only’.
I have tried this fragrance before and I would add that it also feels slightly spicy. Floral Romantique is warm, solar, soft and intense at the same time. It transports you to a midsummer night but this time you are not by the Mediterranean, you are on the middle of a Japanese meadow (the flowers, the earth, the tea…).
Top notes are: ambrette seed, mandarin, petit grain, maté, neroli. Heart notes are: jasmine, tiare flower, lily, orange blossom, ylang-ylang. Base notes are: benzoin, cedar, smoky tea, chestnut.
I will definitely buy a bottle of this one when I can assume the hefty price tag ($260 for 75ml).
Maison Martin Margiela – Replica ‘Lipstick On’
This one belongs to a completely different category compared to the two precedent fragrances. It is not what would normally be considered a solar perfume (although to each its own interpretation, right?). Lipstick On made my wishlist because I’ve been dreaming of a light, powdery, sweet and floral, ladylike scent for ages. It all started with my love of Guerlain makeup products and their fragrance, powders and lipsticks in particular. Have you ever smell the Meteorites?
The brand says ‘Lipstick On combines airy, powdery notes of solid iris with sensual galbanum, vanilla bourbon, and absolute tonka bean to evoke a familiar but forgotten moment—a woman’s nocturnal beauty ritual‘. Dreamy!
Notes are Bergamot Oil, Heliotrope Accord, Neroli Oil, Orange Flower Absolute, Iris Concrete, Galbanum Oil, Tonka Bean Absolute, Vanilla Bourbon Extract, Patchouli Oil.
